Practical tool for designers and architects: ZARGES improves its fixed-ladder configurator and ensures even greater safety

The online tool facilitates standard 3D configuration of access solutions with guardrails in real-time and as normed in DIN 18799-3

Weilheim, Germany, 24 August 2021 – When you are working at heights, it is crucial to have reliable access solutions that focus on the safety of users. To ensure this is the case, ZARGES has upgraded its proven online fixed-ladder configurator by adding the option of selecting appropriate guardrails. The manufacturer of access solutions enables thus enables architects, designers and professionals from the construction industry to configure solutions tailored to their specific applications with just a few mouse clicks and to receive customised 3D visualisation of the products.

The ZARGES online configurator helps users find the solution they need by guiding them through the individual steps on their screen and asking them to provide all relevant information in a logical sequence. It is particularly convenient for everyone involved: the process takes just a short time to complete and allows ZARGES to draw up an offer quickly and effortlessly. As a result, access systems can be delivered and commissioned for use on a customer's premise within just around ten days – a unique feature in terms of user-friendliness and time saving.

Optimised features for maximum safety

In response to the revision of DIN 18799-3 ("Accessories for fixed ladder systems for construction works – Safety requirements and tests"), ZARGES has now upgraded the configurator by adding the option of selecting appropriate guardrails specifically designed for use on roofs. Besides accessories such as safety barriers and access control for maintenance ladders (e.g. security doors and base ladders), the standard was amended to address another critical point: the process of accessing a fixed ladder from a roof should be made as safe as possible. Generally, instead of guardrails, other kinds of safety devices can be used as well. However, personal protective equipment often proves to be more complicated to use than guardrails, as these restricts the user’s working radius far more and require more time for preparation in advance.

One particular challenge was to develop a guardrail that does not need to be bolted down to a roof. This is necessary in order to avoid damaging the roof cladding and thus prevent roof leaks. The solution designed by ZARGES is easy to install and use because it can simply be placed on a roof without drilling and yet offers the same level of safety as solutions that need to be bolted down.

Reliable safety even when crossing over to a roof

As with its predecessors, the latest version of the fixed-ladder configurator is intuitive to use, guiding users step by step to configure their own fixed ladder. During the process, users will be asked to provide all necessary details, such as basic dimensions, arrangement of landing platforms, and the application. Benefits for users include real-time 3D configuration compliant with all relevant standards, an instant quote containing all important dimensions, a 3D drawing that can be incorporated in existing design documents, and downloadable structural calculations, measurement sheets and check sheets. With the newly added option of selecting compatible guardrails, the configurator is able to deliver solutions that fully meet the requirements of the latest DIN 18799-3. Part 3 of the standard concerns the use of guardrails when the distance between a platform/landing and a building exceeds 180 millimetres, safety barriers in guardrails for preventing falls, fall protection devices at exit points, and devices for preventing unauthorised access. The configurator offers a quick and easy way to improve safety using additional devices and makes it easier for planners and on-site workers to secure roof edges adjacent to fixed ladders.

"With the extension of our online configurator, we are specifically strengthening our focus on greater safety when working at heights", explains Martina Moritz, Product Manager Access Special Solutions at ZARGES. "Companies want to use state-of-the-art equipment in order to always ensure the safety of workers. Part of our commitment to help them achieve this is to provide users with further training and update safety standards across sectors."
